"It is no place to make a life"
Adam Hassan is a 29 years old Somali man who came to Kenya where he is supported by his extended family.
It is not safe in Somalia. There has been fighting, then it stopped when I was a boy. Now again….so much and everybody is fighting. If they see a young man, they want you to fight.; the militia, the government…to much mess. You cannot go to work because they catch you and give you AK-47. It is no place to make a life…
Q. How did you come to Kenya?
I have many relatives in Garissa. They told me to come. They planned everything I just went where they told me. When I came across the border many Somalis are coming everyday, young people. My uncle told me that the family has arranged everything and not to worry. I came with my uncle to Nairobi. I stay with him.
Q. What happened when you arrived in Nairobi?
I work with my uncle in his shoe shop. There are many Somalis here and I feel safe. We laugh and eat together. No bombing or shooting every night. When I came, others, they tell me be careful from the police. But my uncle he says that he will look after me….no need to fear. We Somalis here, we keep each other. But I am young. I want to go to the U.K. where I hear things are good. My brother is there lakini ni ngumu sana (but it’s very difficult) to get papers.
